Trump and Trump-supporting Republicans ‘supporting an agenda to promote bigotry and hatred’

President Donald Trump and Republican members of Congress are using their power to help advance their political agenda, according to a new report.
The bipartisan, three-part study released on Monday by the Center for American Progress, a progressive think tank, argues that “Trump is helping his party’s brand, his political allies and his base by advancing his own agenda.”
“President Trump’s efforts to undermine the law and roll back protections for LGBT Americans have emboldened Republicans to defend bigotry and hate,” the report states.
The report also claims that while Trump is attempting to “push the Republican agenda,” “his GOP allies are working to protect them from it.
Republicans who support an agenda that promotes bigotry and fear have been able to hold on to their seats in the House, Senate and governor’s mansions.”
The report says that Republican members in the Senate have “stood by” Trump, while Republican governors have “turned a blind eye” to his actions.
“There’s no evidence that Trump is acting as an effective leader, and he may be undermining efforts to improve health care and education by weakening the Affordable Care Act,” the authors write.
“Instead, Republicans are using the power of the presidency to advance their own agenda that includes a repeal of Obamacare and a return to the status quo ante that allowed them to win in 2020,” they add.
The study found that Trump’s “anti-LGBT policies have hurt his party, including his base, while benefiting his political and corporate supporters.”
In particular, the report argues that Trump has “drew criticism and anger from his own base” and that his actions “are having a negative impact on the Republican Party’s brand and on the nation’s standing in the world.”
“These are the kinds of policies that Trump will be blamed for when the GOP comes back in the White House next year,” the researchers write.
