Trump says he will support ‘tough and fair’ Syrian government

President Donald Trump has made it clear he will back a strong Syrian government that includes a “tough” opposition that will fight Islamic State.
“The president has made clear that he wants to be a tough guy and he’s going to be,” the White House press secretary Sean Spicer told reporters at a briefing on Monday.
“He will support the strongest opposition that we have to this.”
But he added that the US would “stand with the Syrian people” if it were to have to choose between a strong opposition or the “same old Syrian government.”
Trump told reporters Monday that the White, the Whitehouse, and the WhiteHouse Counsel are reviewing how the administration’s policy in Syria has evolved and “the future is unclear.”
The White House has been criticized for allowing the Syrian government to fall and for being too cautious in its handling of the civil war.
“There is no longer a path to a peaceful resolution to the Syrian crisis,” Spicer said.
Trump’s position on Syria has been evolving for months.
Trump, who has been in office for only a few months, took office in January 2017 with a vow to “drain the swamp” in Washington.
He appointed his chief strategist Steve Bannon as the White house chief of staff.
Bannon, who was chief executive of the alt-right news outlet Breitbart News before joining the Trump campaign in August, has made a career out of pushing a nationalist agenda, including a plan to “totally destroy” Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government.
Trump has also pledged to pull out of the UN Security Council, which has imposed sanctions on Damascus for its alleged use of chemical weapons against civilians.
Trump and his aides have said they want to see Assad leave power but have not provided details on how they would achieve that goal.
Spicer said the president does not intend to use force to “liberate” Syria but “we will work with our partners to make sure we do what we need to do to get Assad out of there.”
