Which state will have the highest number of concealed carry permits in 2020?

Washington, D.C. –  A new study from the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) finds that in 2020, the number of residents who have concealed carry permit licenses will exceed the total number of state residents who can lawfully possess handguns.

The NCSL study finds that the number of permits issued for concealed carry is increasing at a rate of about 7 percent per year, with the most recent data from January 2021 through March 2021.

The number of states that have more than 200,000 permits will exceed 1 million, and the number that have fewer than 10,000 will exceed 200,00.

According to the report, more than 1 million people in Washington, DC, have a concealed carry license.

In 2020, a total of 856,000 people, or about 1.5 percent of the state’s population, will be eligible to carry a concealed firearm.

Additionally, the total number who will be able to legally carry a handgun in Washington will exceed 400,000.

NCSL also notes that a significant number of people who are not eligible to possess firearms for self-defense are able to carry concealed firearms for personal protection, such as when on duty at a gun range.
