World News: Australian man shot dead in Colombia

An Australian man has been shot dead on the border between Colombia and Mexico, police said on Monday.

“The police investigation is ongoing, it is an active case and we will continue to do everything in our power to bring those responsible to justice,” Colombia’s state prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

The body of the man was discovered at the border on Monday evening and a search was conducted for the woman who was shot in the leg, according to local media.

Colombia’s state attorney general’s office and the Colombian government have said they are investigating.

Colleges and universities have been ordered to suspend classes and the local government is also offering financial aid to students who want to attend Colombia’s top university.

“Colombian authorities are in the process of searching for the person responsible for the shooting, as well as for the persons who may have witnessed the incident,” the state prosecutor said in the statement.

“Our aim is to prevent the crime from being committed in the future and to provide a safe environment for all Colombiaans.”

Colombians are often seen as the biggest beneficiaries of the US-Colombic free trade deal, with many of the countrys exports to the US coming from the tourism sector.
