Kerala: Thousands of protesters gather in protest against corruption

KERALA: Thousands gathered in protest Saturday against corruption in Kerala, with several thousand protesters staging a sit-in in Kottayam’s Kannur district.

Around 1,000 people were detained by the state police and the local police for the demonstration.

Police said around 1,500 protesters were taken into custody, while several others were taken to the state capital.

The protesters are demanding that the government withdraw the “anti-people” bill from the Legislative Assembly, which they say is designed to give undue power to the powerful and that the “bill has a direct link to the rise of corruption and political patronage.”

A statement by the Legislative Council said the protest would be held in the presence of the police and other authorities and will be conducted in a peaceful manner.

The protest is part of a campaign in Kerala to protest against the “corrupt” nature of the current government and the alleged “war on corruption.”
